These startup companies are constantly looking for ways to become more efficient with limited resources while planning for long-term success. Sun provides startups with an opportunity to reach their full potential through the Sun Startup Essentials program. Launched in November 2006, more than 1,300 companies in the U.S. and Asia have applied for membership in the Sun Startup Essentials program. In response to large demand from startups based outside the China, India and the United States, Sun is extending the program to the United Kingdom and Israel, two regions which have had a significant increase in the number of innovative developers, amount of venture capitalist funding and population of startup companies.

Sun and the Ministry will discuss how they will work together to help strengthen and grow the startup community in Israel. In London, UK, Sun is sponsoring Mashup “Being Digital,” a local community startup event for like-minded professionals to gather and discuss what matters in the digital world.

Juan Carlos Soto, VP of Market Development at Sun Microsystems offered, ”Sun is engaged with the innovative startup communities in the United Kingdom and Israel and, as an avid supporter of building communities, Sun is able to share valuable expertise and offer startups significant discounts through the Sun Startup Essentials program. By expanding the program, we’re reaching emerging as well as leading markets that adopt and adapt new technology rapidly, and we’re enabling startups to get to market quickly and economically.”

The Sun Startup Essentials program in the UK and Israel helps eligible startup companies by allowing them to purchase a range of discounted Sun products and services, including the award-winning Sun Fire x64 servers and Sun Fire servers with CoolThreads technology. Program members can also work with Sun worldwide hosting partners Layered Technologies and NaviSite, plus regional hosting partner NTT Europe Online, to rent discounted Web hosting infrastructure based on Sun technologies. In addition to offering products and services to eligible UK- and Israel-based startup companies, Sun is also offering free technical advice via email and access to free software, such as Apache, MySQL and Perl (AMP), Ruby on Rails all optimized to run on the open source Solaris OS.

Sun began offering web hosting services, based upon the Solaris 10 Operating System, and Sun systems and storage, through a partnership with Joyent and NaviSite. The offer is available for eligible U.S. based members of the Sun Startup Essentials program, designed to help early-stage companies get to market more quickly on Sun’s enterprise- class technologies at a cost that fits their needs to conserve cash.

The hosting requirements of Web 2.0 and Internet Services startups typically differ from those of traditionally established companies, due to their increased need to grow and expand services with fluctuating customer demands. Sun is working closely with Joyent and NaviSite to help address these requirements and is now able to offer these emerging companies all the advantages of the extremely flexible and scalable Solaris 10 OS based infrastructure.

Joyent and NaviSite are using Solaris Container virtualization technology, part of the Solaris 10 OS, the most advanced OS on the planet, to deliver the secure and high-performance infrastructure to help deploy next-generation web applications that can scale based on demand. Sun’s partners also provide value-add services to manage and monitor their hosted environments. With highly flexible hosting offerings, customers can choose to start with a small capacity and grow flexibly as their business and community grows.
