A Look At The History Of Keyword Stuffing
At one time, in order to pass the “test” conducted by the search engine optimization (SEO) software, some websites got a rather unconventional (and unethical) makeover. The content on those websites received a generous amount of keyword stuffing. The web pages on those websites became full of keywords, many of which appeared in the meta tags.
The practice known as keyword stuffing no longer takes place, because search engines now use factors other than keywords whenever they are ranking the searched websites. The hiding of text has replaced keyword stuffing, as a technique that is used to make a website “look” better to a search engine. Text has been hidden by either blending it with the background or by placing it behind an image.
Not all keyword stuffing has been employed in order to “deceive” a search engine. In the past, some keyword stuffing had as its goal the re-direction of Internet traffic to a webpage of relevance. That was before search engines had begun to use themed, related keyword techniques. Because search engines now rely on those techniques to interpret the relevance of web content, keyword stuffing has become an outdated practice.
So, if search engines no longer rely on keywords to rank websites in a site index, what factors do the search engines consider? One factor of which search engines take note relates to the extent to which the content on a webpage makes sense. A search engine does not reward a website that has lots of keywords, but has no meaningful statements containing those keywords.
Search engines also deny a high ranking to any website that has a great number of extraneous information. If the content on the website is not somehow related to the keyword given to the search engine, then the search engine will not give that website a good ranking.
